Twogere Community Initiatives is a Centre for Suicide Prevention. While the causes of suicide are in many ways still a mystery, there is growing, scientifically based evidence that suicide is highly associated with, and in the majority of cases, the result of psychiatric disorder. Mental health disorders particularly depression and substance abuse are associated with more than 90% of all cases of suicide. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates are that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate at 16 people per 100,000 or one death every forty seconds. There is compelling evidence that adequate prevention through public awareness can reduce suicide rates, and this is why we exist as the centre.
Our work is based on the foundation and belief that suicide is preventable and everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. Through raising public awareness, educating communities, and equipping every person with the right tools, we know we can SAVE lives.
